Originally the meeting between Gonçalo Almeida, Rodrigo Amado and Marco Franco, three influential figures of the Portuguese improvised music scene, The Attic has evolved to include Dutch drummer Onno Govaert, a crucial member of the Amsterdam jazz scene and part of the youngest generation of European improvised music. Together, they recorded the second album of The Attic, Summer Bummer, live in Antwerp, and released Love Ghosts in 2022 (both on No Business records).

All About Jazz concluded that, “while Amado will no doubt continue to find willing partners among his fellow avant-garde luminaries, his trio recordings offer the most complete glimpse of his prowess, and Love Ghosts could be his best yet.”

Set between free jazz, improvisation and real time composition, the music recovers different elements from the jazz tradition, reconfiguring them in vibrant in-the-moment improvised songs, building and developing a fluid dialogue between the three musicians.

The Attic, oorspronkelijk een samenwerkingsverband tussen Gonçalo Almeida, Rodrigo Amado en Marco Franco, drie invloedrijke figuren uit de Portugese geïmproviseerde muziekscene, is uitgegroeid tot een groep met de Nederlandse drummer Onno Govaert, een cruciaal lid van de Amsterdamse jazzscene en onderdeel van de jongste generatie Europese geïmproviseerde muziek. Samen namen ze het tweede album van The Attic, Summer Bummer, live op in Antwerpen, en brachten ze in 2022 Love Ghosts uit (beide op No Business Records).

All About Jazz concludeerde dat “hoewel Amado ongetwijfeld bereidwillige partners zal blijven vinden onder zijn mede-avant-garde grootheden, zijn trio-opnames het meest complete beeld geven van zijn kunnen, en Love Ghosts misschien wel zijn beste werk tot nu toe is.”

De muziek, die het midden houdt tussen free jazz, improvisatie en realtime compositie, haalt verschillende elementen uit de jazztraditie en herconfigureert ze in levendige, geïmproviseerde nummers, waarbij een vloeiende dialoog tussen de drie muzikanten wordt opgebouwd en ontwikkeld.
